About

Curious about how things work.

Then figuring out how to make them work better. That instinct has followed me through business, sales, nonprofit leadership, ministry, and writing.

The work

How I got here

I've spent my career around organizations, markets, technology, and people. The details have varied a lot. The pattern hasn't: someone needed a complicated thing understood, and then they needed to decide what to do about it.

Early on I helped found a healthcare company. We built it, it grew, and I took a buyout at 35. Building something from nothing teaches you quickly what matters and what only looks busy.

Since then I've led sales and business development in telecommunications, including leadership roles inside large publicly traded companies. That's where I learned to explain technical products to people who don't care about the technology. They care about what it does for them.

Alongside that work I've stayed close to the nonprofit world. I founded a healthcare foundation and served as board chairman of a nonprofit that has cared for adults with intellectual disabilities for 50 years. Today I consult with nonprofits and churches on direction, growth, and the systems that keep good work going.

Writing

Three books

Sweat Equity is for leaders of businesses and nonprofits. Organizations tend to treat donors well and treat volunteers as free labor. The book makes the case that people who give their time deserve the same attention.

Guardrail Parenting is the book Danielle and I wrote together about love, boundaries, and what we'd do differently. It's out now in paperback and Kindle at guardrailparents.com.

Anointed Algorithm: How to Be Spirit-Led in a Tech-Driven World is for pastors and church leaders trying to use AI wisely without losing what matters most.

Before the career

Oklahoma

I ran track as a Division I athlete at the University of Oklahoma. Some of what I learned there shows up in my work more than I expected: preparation matters more than talent alone, and good coaching mostly means telling people the truth in a way they can use.

Family first

Danielle and I have been married more than 33 years. We raised four children who are grown now, and we're grandparents. Family is the center of my life outside of work, and most of my best days still involve a crowded table.

I enjoy family, friends, and community. I also like eclectic music, sports, a good book, and a long conversation with someone who sees the world differently than I do.
